Homeschooling with Music

My six-year-old daughter is a natural music-lover. She dances through life, wakes up with a song, and looks forward to owning her own dance studio some day. So when we had the opportunity to review a Musik at Home Membership from Musik at Home, we were excited to incorporate music into our daily routine.

This online program is made available through Vimeo and is perfect for early childhood education. While parent participation is always best, there were times when I was distracted educating my older two while my first grader had nothing left to do, so off she would go to “attend” Musik at Home class by herself.

Although my daughter is about to age out of the program, I do believe that this has been beneficial for her. She enjoyed beating her rhythm sticks (okay, a pencil and a pen), dancing, singing, and hearing stories through song.

One of the benefits of this program is that you can do it from the comfort of your own home and with items you already have in your house. Rhythm sticks can be replaced with wooden spoons; a shaker can be made from a jar of beans; and a scarf can be a cloth napkin if you don’t have any scarves.

There are hundreds of activities for your child to participate in based on your child’s age. The classes are set up as series with episodes on Vimeo. We joined the group on Facebook, which is a private group for Musik at Home members. Kathryn Brunner, the founder of Musik at Home and an early childhood music director, immediately messaged me to make sure that I had everything I needed and to point me in the right direction for my daughter’s musical needs.

I was pleased to see that the class we had already started–Family Music for Ages 4-7–was the right class for us.

There are Family Music classes for babies all the way up to age seven. I also love that there are classes offered for families with mixed ages. If I had discovered this program when my other two kids were little, I would have been able to get the whole family involved! So, if you have little ones, this program would be a great fit for you home.

Kathryn also offers introduction videos to different instruments. While these are not in-depth courses, they are a great way to get your child to listen for a beat and rhythm as they participate with each song. This is where the rhythm sticks and shakers come into play. It’s a great way to spend some time with your child and enjoy the fun of learning with music!

Kathryn also encourages movement–mostly through dance but also through singing games. She even introduces classical music, such as “The Flight of the Bumblebee,” in a fun way that engages the children’s interest.

And Kathryn has also found a way to use sounds and play to make early Graphic notation fun. As she teaches the alphabet sounds, she uses special effects to make the sounds more pronounced and, thus, more memorable to the children.

There are so many fun things to explore through this program, and your child will enjoy the music and movement as they learn fine motor skills. I really don’t see any negatives to this program, especially now when a lot of places are still shut down and our kids need creative ways to express themselves.
