Over the last couple of months, my daughter has enjoyed helping me review Reading Eggs by Blake eLearning Inc.
This online program provides an easy way for her to learn to read without feeling overwhelmed by a lot of words at one time. I have found that if she sees a page with a lot of words, she will shut down completely. But Reading Eggs keeps her engaged with fun videos, games, and rewards.
Reading Eggs has been a great addition for our homeschool as my first grader can’t do a lot of her own work without me guiding her and sometimes has to wait while I work on some of the harder subjects with my older children. This program has solved the problem as all I have to do is login for her and let her choose which direction she wants to go.
Reading Eggs isn’t the only program she gets to use, though. Fast Phonics is the new addition to Reading Eggs and works to help her sharpen her phonics skills to make her a stronger reader. One area my daughter struggles with is hearing the right sounds for letters. This is partly due to a speech delay, but the extra phonics lessons are fun and engaging and are helping her to understand her sounds better.
This online program doesn’t stop with just reading, though. Mathseeds is another part of the program, providing a way to enhance your student’s math skills while also enhancing reading. This program matches numbers with their corresponding words. My daughter is getting stronger in being able to recognize numbers when they are written out rather than just in numerical form.
She has also been working on her shapes, although she already knows all of them in first grade. She doesn’t like that part of the program because she says it’s too easy, but she can pick and choose what she wants to work on, too. And sometimes, she does like to have an easier assignment.
She also loves that she can see her own progress. When she completes a lesson, she is able to move down the path to the next level. And along the way, she earns points that she can use in treasure boxes along the way.
After five lessons, she was given a quiz to see how well she was learning. She was so pleased with herself for passing with flying colors!
One part of the program that I love as a parent/teacher is that I can see her progress. When she completes a lesson, a progress report is sent to my email, and I can look at her progress on the parent dashboard. I am also able to see what level she is at with her reading and math skills without her feeling overwhelmed or pressured by testing.
An added benefit to this program is that there are printable worksheets for days when you have to take homeschool with you and can’t log in somewhere. This is valuable for portfolios as well if you want to be able to save worksheets to your child’s folder. So far, we haven’t had to do that, though, as my daughter has really been enjoying the online version, but I love that I always have that option!
This program is available for ages 0-13, but I really wanted to focus this program for just my first grader. The other two have a lot on their plates, but this may be something they add into their routine once they free up some of their time. Plus, this was something that my first grader wanted to do for herself. But if you have older children, this is a great program to enhance spelling and math skills.
If you’re interested, I suggest giving your child one of the placement tests first to see at which level they should start. You can also try out some sample lessons. And, of course, check out some of the other reviews from the Homeschool Review Crew:
