Dee Henderson invites the reader once again into the lives of the O’Malley family, an extraordinary family of orphans who have adopted each other and grown up together. In each book, Henderson has brought to life each member of the family, showing their journeys to find love and Christ.
In this novella, noted as “the story behind the story,” Henderson brings to light the backstory of Jennifer, the “baby” of the family and the first of the O’Malleys to find Christ. As a pediatrician to cancer patients, Jennifer meets death on a daily basis. Unable to see hope for these children, Jennifer carries the weight of the world on her shoulders until she meets the dazzling surgeon, Tom Peterson.
Tom’s love for Christ is evident and carries over into everything he does. When Tom pursues a friendship with Jennifer, she finds herself reluctantly being pulled into the church and faith that Tom loves so much. With Tom by her side, Jennifer finds herself not only falling in love with a man but also falling in love with his God.
But when tragedy strikes her a blow, will Jennifer be able to hold onto new love and new-found faith? Or will her world spiral out of control?
Once again, Henderson delivers a pretty predictable love story. But the difference with Henderson’s stories is that she naturally entwines the Gospel throughout the book without making it feel forced. I often find new truths in God’s Word through Henderson’s books. That alone causes me to want to read more from this author.
And if you’re looking for a short summer read, this book would be a great addition to your pool bag!
